Swedish freeskier Matilda Rapaport dead following avalanche

Matilda Rapaport has passed away after being caught in an avalanche last Thursday – our thoughts are with her family and friends

Swedish freeskier Matilda Rapaport has died after being caught in an avalanche on Thursday 14 July 2016.

The 30-year-old athlete was skiing in Farrellones, Chile when she was caught in an avalanche.

She was buried under the snow for a long stretch of time (about 30 minutes, according to reports) and had been in a coma since her rescue. She died from complications caused by lack of oxygen on 18 July 2016.

“Matilda was a great friend of mine and a source of inspiration; not only in the mountains, but at every time and place when we spent time together. As an athlete she was successful and professional in all aspects but what I always will remember is Matilda´s personality; her friendship, her big heart, her intelligence and all her human qualities. The loss of Matilda is unimaginable. My thoughts are with her family and friends. May I here express the sadness and compassion we all feel at Peak Performance.

Matilda has competed on the Freeride World Tour and starred in ski films including Shades of Winter. She married Swedish World Cup alpine skier Mattias Hargin earlier this year. Our thoughts go out to Mattias and all of Matilda’s friends and family.
