Austrian company Original+ have picked up the ISPO 2019 Brandnew award for their innovative mass custom ski manufacturing concept.
If you’ve ever dreamed of designing your own skis you’ll know that turning dreams into reality can be a prohibitively expensive business. Owning a pair of handcrafted skis specially built to match your individual ski DNA requires splashing serious levels of cash and as a result it’s often only possible for pro skiers, folk with more money than sense, or those who are happy to sell their internal organs to fund the purchase.
But all of this could be about to change with the launch of Original+, a revolutionary new concept designed to deliver mass custom ski manufacturing at competitive prices.
The Austrian company’s software works with artificial intelligence to interpret a skier’s biometric data. The information is then combined with personal preferences such as skiing style, preferred terrain etc and translated into a tailor-made pair of skis.
“The award was given for mass custom manufacturing, which—when implemented at competitive prices—would be a major step for the industry,” explains Thorsten Schwabe from INDIGO, a longtime member of the ISPO Brandnew jury.
Whilst we’re yet to see the concept in action, we’re very much looking forward to checking it all out at ISPO in February.
If all this artificial intelligence stuff sounds way too fancy and you’re up for a bit of DIY, then why not have a go at making your own skis instead?
