In pictures: The Alps finally get snow
50cm in Chamonix, 40cm in Verbier and one foot in the Arlberg… it’s finally happened! Snow has come to the Alps and we could not be more stoked
There’s no denying it: Christmas and New Year in the Alps were pretty dismal, with skiers edging their way down thin ribbons of man-made snow in all but the highest of resorts. But times are a changing and the first big snowfall has already transformed the Alps, with more powder on its way. Here’s how things are looking:
Chamonix is getting the brunt of the snowstorm: over 50cm has fallen so far and a further metre is expected this week.
Damüls, in the Bregenzerwald has some of the best snow in Austria right now, with a foot falling over the weekend and more set to come.
Alpe d’Huez, France looked like this last night. Around a metre of snow is predicted for the resort in the next few days.
Like much of the Mont Blanc region, Les Contamines is getting pounded, with an extra 53cm of snow expected over the next six days.
Crans-Montana, in the Swiss canton of Valais, has transformed into a winter wonderland, and more snow is forecasted.
Warth-Schröcken, part of the Arlberg ski area, clocked in 30cm on Saturday night alone.
Over in Italy, Courmayeur has received around 0.5m of snow in the last few days, with nearly another metre expected.
30cm of snow fell in Val d’Isere overnight, with forecasts showing a further 0.5m on its way.
In Switzerland, Gstaad is expecting the most snow, with at least 60cm expected.
