[Discounting glacier resorts, OK? -Ed] On Sunday, A-Basin in Colorado set the Black Mountain Express lift in motion, kicking off the 2022-23 season in Colorado.
The resort has been blowing snow since 9 October and Sunday’s opening saw the real deal, with big flakes floating down on the first skiers and riders of winter.
The challenge (to be the first to open) has been going on 20-odd years, with the main competition between neighbouring resorts A-Basin and Loveland, both with similar elevation and weather. But it’s not just about the first to open, with resorts battling it out for the longest season in Colorado.
Aside from its early skiing allure, what else is it about the legendary Arapahoe Basin that puts it on the radar of so many expert skiers and riders?
