phaenom FS 01 Review
New brand alert! Yes, phaenom (the lowercase ‘p’ is part of its trademark) is a new freeski boot brand, from the same company as Faction skis, with two styles. The FS 01 is freestyle focused, while the FR 01 is for freeride and gets an Editors’ Choice award in our Freeride boot test (page 93). We don’t have a Freestyle boots section this season, but the FS 01 would defo get an Editors’ Choice award if we did – it’s that good.
It uses a lot of recycled materials and is built in a way that allows for easier recycling, and replacement of knackered parts. There’s one FS shell design, with two different liners. The HV liner has stiffer padding and is thinner, meaning you get more room inside. This sits inside the 100 and 120 flex boots, in sizes 24-28MP. The 90 and 110 flex boots get the thicker, softer foam MV liner, available in 23-26MP.
The shell has a cabrio three-piece design, yet the cuff is an overlap affair, and the chunky rubber strap dynamically absorbs hits. We sometimes just skied with the strap providing all the tension; it’s fantastic. This is a superb product that skis phenomenally (sorry) well. If you want a very low-volume fit, these may not work for you.
