Zag Ubac 89
Zag are the real deal, slowly gaining traction as a veritable “connoiseur’s choice” for serious backcountry adventures.
Like others before them, they are all about the big-mountain ski experience. Unlike many, they have stayed small and true to their passions. They only produce four lines of skis, in varying sizes, which are all produced in Chamonix. Simple. Pure. Authentic . . .
For those in the know, an Ubac is a north facing slope in the local Haute Savoie dialect. You may trip over this word (and Adret – the sunny side) in the local avalanche bulletins from time to time. In a similar vein, for those in the know, the Zag Ubac skis are the epitome of free-touring performance. I know many people who have tried them. I don’t know any who have gone back to their previous brand. Curious?
So when they bring out a new version of this iconic ski line, we are on the edge of our seats. With 89 being the new 95 under foot, this ski promises amazing performance both up and down the hill.
Being true to the descent, a paulonia wood core is bound to deliver a playful ski, and Zag have become awesome at balancing enough grunt and grip in a lightweight package.
At 176cm you get a floaty shovel (123mm) with 20% tip rocker, combined with an intermediate (20m) radius. All you need to float down the pow, whilst a weight of only 2.54kg per pair means you can float back up again as well!
As if that wasn’t enough, with the new ZAGreen program, we can be sure that their new skis will enable us to “explore more, destroy less” exactly as intended.
Verdict
With 89 being the new 95 under foot, the new Ubac 89 promises amazing performance both up and down the hill.
