Introducing new documentary series Pack Heavy → Chase Light
Directed and shot by Sam Moody
Scandinavian travel gear brand DB is following the lives of 15 creatives across the world working in outdoor sports.
The Pack Heavy, Chase Light episodes share the personal perspectives of photographers, filmers, writers and influential figures working in their sports. They talk about navigating their gear, lives and expectations as they move around the globe, chasing the stories that need to be told.
In this fifth episode, director Sam Moody goes to Sacramento to chat to 26-year-old filmmaker Luis Medearis.
Luis, raised in Compton Los Angeles, swapped life as a college basketball player for a career on the slopes. He’s described by Sam as “psychotically nice”.
Luis wants to show people of colour they have more options than just joining a basketball team – the mountains are calling them and there’s plenty of room for everyone.
“The mountains really do change so many things for so many people. We definitely want more people snowboarding – it’s the best thing ever”
It was Luis that approached DB via its ambassador link. After about 30 seconds of watching his showreel and learning about his background, DB recruited him to its inner circle.
He’s only been filming for two years, but has covered a huge amount of ground in that time. He went from filming his college basketball team to working with the US Snowboarding team in a season, and is a huge advocate and spokesperson for increasing the diversity of the sport.
Previous films have included photographer turned ceramicist Josh Zucker, surf photographer Christa Funk and filmmaker Benjamin Ortega.
