Papsura | Peak of Evil

A jagged triangle of rock and ice rising above the Tosh Valley, Papsura is one of the loneliest summits in the Indian Himalaya. Alongside its twin peak, Dharmsura, it is known locally as the Peaks of Good and Evil. At over 21,100 feet, its true height is debated with some claiming 21,120 feet and others saying 21,252, but there is no argument about its presence. Remote, wild, and split by a near mythical line, it is a prize for only the most skilled ski mountaineers.
In 2017, the late Hilaree Nelson, Jim Morrison, and photographer Chris Figenshau made history as the first to ski from the summit, threading the 2,500 foot couloir in full whiteout conditions. Afterward, Hilaree encouraged snowboarder Nick Russell to take on the peak himself, calling it one of the most beautiful lines she had ever skied.
Now, Russell and fellow Sierra Nevada rider Jerry Mark are answering that call. Their journey from California to the depths of Himachal Pradesh is chronicled in Papsura Peak of Evil, as they push their skills to the limit in pursuit of the biggest descent of their lives.
