Engelberg is located 25km south of Lake Lucerne in a wide mountain valley at an altitude of around 1000m. The 3239m Titlis mountain and its glacier and the Hahnen Mountain, standing at 2ó00m, tower over the resort. They make sure that there’s snow far into the spring season. One of the top 10 ski regions in Switzerland, Engelberg is also known for its diverse ski and freeride area.
Engelberg offers skiing on both sides of the valley, and they couldn’t be more different.
The Titlis area is split into two distinct sections, the Trübsee-Stand-Titlis which includes glacier, a huge amount of incredible off-piste and a vertical drop of nearly 2000m. The Jochpass area is smaller, with interesting on-and off-piste skiing.
Engelberg gets a five-star rating for expert skiers with its famous Laub off-piste area – wide, steep with around 1000m vertical and great views over the village. More unmarked routes can be found with up to 2,000m of vertical descent. On the piste and the runs are equally challenging, with steep, mogulled slopes to seek out below the glacier.
The smaller Brunni area sits on the sunny side of the mountain with a handful of runs and includes beginners area, Klostermatte. The snow is produced exclusively from solar energy and pure mountain spring water. Since 2013 its cableways have been running on 100% hydropower – CO2 free.
The long, snowy winter begins as early as October and lasts into May.
Engelberg is not just a winter resort — it’s a winter paradise.
There’s 55km of cross-country ski trails and winter hiking trails, plus three different sledding runs open at night for some fast downhill. The town is seriously picturesque and is famous for its Benedictine monastery.
